A garden for the whole family
The best family gardens combine two things: a place where children can play freely, and a garden you enjoy sitting in too.
Lawn: the play base
A lawn is essential for children. Football, rolling, picnics. Choose a play lawn mix that can take a beating. Don't mow too short — 5cm is more resilient.
Safe plants
Avoid toxic plants where young children can reach them: no foxglove, yew berries, oleander. Safe choices: lavender, sunflowers, daisies, most ornamental grasses.
Edible garden for kids
Nothing is more fun for children than picking food from the garden. Plant strawberries, cherry tomatoes in pots, and sunflowers they sowed themselves.
Integrating play equipment
Place equipment on rubber tiles or thick wood chips (at least 20cm) for safety. Surround play areas with tough plants — ornamental grasses, hardy geraniums.
