Step by step: plant oakleaf Hydrangea

Oakleaf hydrangea thrives in partial shade, making it ideal for woodland-style borders or spots that receive morning sun and afternoon shade. Avoid deep shade, which reduces flowering, and full sun, which can scorch the distinctive oak-shaped leaves. The plant tolerates a range of soils but performs best in loam or peat-based soil that is moisture-retentive yet well-drained. Heavy clay should be improved with organic matter, and very alkaline soils are best avoided as they can cause chlorosis. Plant container-grown specimens in March, April, September, or October when the soil is workable and not waterlogged. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball but no deeper, so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Fork over the base of the hole and mix in plenty of well-rotted compost or leaf mould to improve structure and moisture retention. Space plants 200 cm apart to allow for their mature spread of 150–250 cm; they develop into substantial, rounded shrubs. Remove the plant from its pot, gently tease out any circling roots, and position it in the hole. Backfill with the excavated soil mixed with compost, firming gently as you go to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting, even if the soil feels damp, to settle the roots. Apply a 5–8 cm layer of organic mulch such as bark chips or leaf mould around the base, keeping it clear of the stems. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a deep root system.
