Water wisely

Water twice a week deeply rather than a little every day. Water early morning (before 8am) to reduce evaporation and prevent fungal diseases on wet leaves at night.

Mulch everything

A 5-7cm layer of mulch retains moisture, suppresses weeds and protects roots from heat.

Deadhead spent flowers

Remove faded flowers from roses, dahlias and lavender. The plant redirects energy to new blooms instead of seed production.

Lawn care

Mow at 5-7cm height in summer. Short grass dries faster and gives weeds more opportunity. Leave clippings as mulch.

Harvest and resow

Pick tomatoes, courgettes and beans regularly. After harvesting early crops, sow a second round of lettuce, spinach or radish.
